Cars & Plates exists because the Australian heritage plate market lacked one thing: transparency. We changed that.
Heritage number plates are serious assets. In 2024, NSW "1" sold for $11.5M, while double-digit plates regularly exceed $1 million. Even mid-tier plates with strong patterns often trade well into the six-figure range.
Cars & Plates exists to bring transparency and insight to this market. By combining historical sales records, market analysis, and real-time listings, the platform helps owners understand the true value of their plates and enables buyers to make informed decisions.
Our valuation model is built on 700+ verified sales from every major Australian heritage plate auction. Real data, properly weighted.
Australian heritage number plates are state-issued plates predating modern alphanumeric formats. In NSW, they were first issued between 1910-1937 beginning with NSW 1 and increasing sequentially with each new registered vehicle until 273,978. Today less than 2000 combinations remain in circulation and are highly sought-after by collectors.
In Victoria, QLD and other states, formats vary but the underlying collector dynamics are consistent: shorter is rarer, patterns command premiums, and lucky numbers (especially 8s) attract a stronger buyers pool.

HOW THE
MODEL WORKS
Every publicly available result from Lawsons, Shannons, Collecting Cars, Lloyds, Trading Garage and other Australian heritage plate auctions is tracked and catalogued, including plate, state, hammer price, and sale date.
Each plate is analysed for 40+ pattern features: digit count, numeric value, repeating sequences, palindromes, lucky 8 density, birth years, ascending/descending sequences, and plate length.
When you enter a plate, we find the closest comparable sales from the database using a weighted similarity score: state match, character count, plate type (numeric/alpha/mixed), pattern score proximity, and numeric value proximity for low-number plates.
The final estimate blends comp-weighted prices (prioritising recent exact matches at 8× weight), hard overrides for well-established plate types (all-8s, single digits, alternating patterns), and a pattern-score fallback for rare plates with no direct comparables.

RATINGS MEAN
Three or more strong comparable sales found, or an exact match sold within the last 12 months. The estimate range is tight (±8–20%).
1–2 comparable sales found, or a special plate with override pricing blended with partial comps. Range is moderate (±20–25%).
No direct comparables. Estimate is derived from pattern scoring and historical bucket ranges. Range is wider (±25–30%). Use as a guide only.

Heritage plate values are affected by factors our model cannot capture: plate condition, provenance, accompanying documentation, vendor reputation, bidding atmosphere, and private buyer relationships. Off-market transactions — which represent a significant portion of high-value plate trades — are not reflected in our dataset.
