PLATE'S
VALUE.

WHAT DRIVES
PLATE VALUE?
Fewer digits means greater prestige — and exponentially greater value. NSW “1” sold publicly for $11.5M in 2024. Each step down from 6 to 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 digit is not a linear progression but an order-of-magnitude shift in scarcity and collector demand.
Cultural demand drives a significant premium for plates containing multiple 8s. The more 8s present — and the lower the digit count — the stronger the collector appetite tends to be.
Visually symmetric plates — palindromes, repeating sequences, ascending runs — carry a consistent collector premium across all price brackets.
NSW plates trade at a premium due to deeper buyer pools and regular Lawsons auctions. VIC heritage plates are seeing rapid growth through Heritage Only, Collecting Cars and Trading Garage — creating new opportunities for savvy investors.
The best plate deals happen privately — no buyer’s premium, no public pressure. Knowing true market value is your edge whether buying or selling off-market.
HOW IT
WORKS
Every valuation is anchored to actual sale prices from major Australian heritage plate auctions across NSW and VIC throughout 2022–26.
We find the most similar plates that have sold, weighted by recency, state, character length, and desirability patterns.
Repeating digits, lucky 8s, palindromes, sequences and rarity within each digit class are all factored into the estimate.
Every estimate carries a confidence level — HIGH when strong comps exist, down to INFERRED for rare plates with no direct comparables.
